— photographer & director
Toon Aerts (°1977) graduated with honours from the Sint Lukas film school in Brussels in 2001 on presentation of his short film Dialing the Devil which won numerous national and international awards. His second short film Perfect Drug was released in 2012 and toured the international film festival scene. It was selected for amongst others Clermont-Ferrand, Imagine and Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival where it was also awarded a prestigious Melies D'argent. At the Brussels International Film Festival it took home the Grand Prize.
Toon signed up with production company CZAR and directed commercials for some of the most creative agencies in Belgium and the Netherlands. He is also directing music videos (including for his own band - The Sha-La-Lee's) and started photographing a lot of bands. Next to directing, he is now focussing on photography and did the set photography for A Gentle Creature, feature 22nd of May and series Generatie B, Over water and Baptiste.
Toon's work, being it his films or his photos, are characterised by a strong visual style. His work clearly refers to elements of popular culture like horror movies, sci-fi, 70's exploitation or television series. Toon likes images that are loud, colourful, larger than life and over-the-top. Toon tries to intrigue the viewer, to capture his attention and more importantly show the viewer the way he likes to look at reality ...
